E-mail Marketing Industry Benchmarks: Highest Open Rate in Q1 2013 Since 2006

The Q2 2013 E-mail Trends and Benchmarks Report was released by Epsilon earlier this month and it showed some interesting trends.
The first quarter of this year saw the highest average open rate (31.3 percent) since at least 2006. It was also the largest quarter-over-quarter jump (14 percent) in opens that we've seen. In second quarter, the open rate dropped but it's still the second highest we've seen (28.5 percent), suggesting that the upward trend in open rates will continue.
The real surprise for me here was the click-through rate. After reaching 5.1 percent in the first quarter, a boost of 13 percent over the fourth quarter of last year, it's down to 4.3 percent. This is a 16 percent loss over first quarter and the lowest click-through rate we've seen since at least 2006. Prior to 2012, the industry average was consistently 5 percent or higher. I was hoping the click-through rate would stabilize, but the slide continues.

Driving Loyalty With Customer-Centric Marketing

There are two contrasting approaches to marketing—customer centric and product centric. Product-centric marketing focuses on what's being sold; campaigns are organized by product. Currently, product-centric marketing dominates the marketing landscape. But customer-centric marketing, which begins with analyzing customer behavior and deciding which customers to target, is a powerful and underutilized alternative that is key to building customer loyalty.
Both approaches are useful. When a company introduces a new product or its warehouse is overflowing with inventory, marketers roll out product-centric direct marketing campaigns featuring those products. Customer-centric marketing is a newer skill with far fewer practitioners and a less well understood methodology, despite its many advantages. Here are the components of that methodology.
Targeting
If the focus is on the customer, the place to start is deciding which customers to target. The product-centric extreme is a “spray-and-pray” campaign targeting everyone with the same message and offer. More sophisticated segment targeting can be either product centric (find potential buyers for our new widgets) or customer centric (target customers who have recently visited our website).

Brand Building Through Mergers And Acquisitions

Relationships are becoming more one on one; communications are becoming faster and more frequent; customer loyalty cycles are becoming shorter – and yet organizations, returning to merger mode after the global financial crisis, are scaling to breathtaking size. The dichotomy between the intimacy with which customers are looking for and the footprint that companies are generating in order to, supposedly, reach those individuals more efficiently is glaring.
My awareness of this incongruity sprang from a conversation recently about the mega merger of Omnicom and Publicis. We were talking through how such a merger would probably be great for the agencies’ biggest clients but might read as a signal to depart for the many that would now fall below the horizon of attention. Imagine how much clout you’re going to have as a marketing client with even a few million to spend in a Group that will be billing around $23 billion? Imagine how difficult it is for a company of that scale to deliver communications that feel one on one?

5 Direct Marketing Mistakes and how to Avoid Them

Long gone are the days of mass mailing cheesy, generic postcards—or so we hope. The modern marketer uses direct marketing as an enticement to spark interest and get a response. It's definitely an effective tool, but starting a campaign with a bland, general mailing can be costly and annoying to customers.  

Here are five common mistakes and ways you can avoid them:  
1) Going too broad
Not properly segmenting your audience is like throwing darts while wearing a blindfold. It hurts your brand when customers receive irrelevant promotional materials.
Instead: Identify and target your ideal customers by delivering your marketing message using the right channels at the right time. For example, if you want to capture the Gen Y market, find them on Facebook, but if you're after the older, more tech-savvy male audience then go to Google+. If you're doing email marketing, make sure your list is clean with updated information and stay away from mass mailing. Rely on your in-house list as those are the people who opted-in and have already shown an interest in your company. Better yet, allow customers to pick their preferred method of correspondence whether it's by phone, email, postal mail, or social media.

Digital is key to brand building

At the IAB’s annual Engage conference, representatives from companies including Unilever, Microsoft and Yahoo, talked about how they were using digital media to establish ongoing relationships in an ‘always on’ world.

Jay Altschuler, Unilever’s director of global media innovation, told attendees the FMCG giant aimed to be a people-centric company and that digital, and mobile in particular was at the core of its communications strategy.

Meanwhile, Ross Honey, Microsoft’s general manager for Xbox Advertising, said content-personalisation will be a key area of focus in the online services giant’s marketing of the Xbox One, which launches next month.     

Also speaking at the event was IAB chairman, Richard Eyre, who said companies need to focus on becoming people-centric brands, not revenue-driven ones.
He said: “For brand marketers, technology has made a 1:1 relationship with customers a reality. The most important value for brands to pursue is trust, because if you don’t have that, then customers won’t let you use their data.

You often hear sad stories about someone that wound up with a “lemon”—a common term for bad products or services that are said to be great, but then aren’t up to snuff.

Sometimes, the lemons aren’t that large, like a broken smartphone that is easily replaced, and sometimes the lemon is large and can cause horrible accidents, such as a poorly made car with faulty airbags. But whether the lemon is big or small is irrelevant; what’s important is knowing they exist and, like it or not, you might end up with the next one.

For product fulfillment pros, a lemon is something that will likely rear its ugly head at one point or another. When you are dealing with as many products and services as a single product fulfillment business does, the chances of coming into contact with a poor product or service are rather high. It’s great, and sometimes even odd, when you discover a talent. Ex-007 Roger Moore is noted to have impressed a crew on one of his later James Bond films with his truck-driving skills, something he learned as a struggling actor. Crime writer Raymond Chandler, originally an executive and now considered one of history’s best writers, managed to find a talent for writing when forced to during the Great Depression. Music producer Berry Gordy failed at both marriage and record store operation, but used the production tactics he learned from the Ford Plant to create the famous Motown Records. When you find that thing that makes you something special, it defines you.

In fact, we all have traits that define us as people. Narcissism aside, we all have one or two skills that we can do better than most—skills we often want to utilize and make something of ourselves with.

This is all fine, but while there are things we can do well, there’s a lot more we can’t. And while we want to improve in these areas, we often never do.

In the end, there’s no shame in this; admitting you can’t do certain things is only human. However, if you’re a product fulfillment pro, you have to understand that you’ll need help for those jobs you can’t do. Again, there’s no shame in it, just be aware of where to find the right assistance.

John Lewis plans marketing push for new click-and-collect service

The ads will incorporate radio, online, mobile and email, as well as door drops, using geo-targeting to reach customers living in regions where the test is running. The trial will initially be available in Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales and the South West of England.
The service, offered in partnership with CollectPlus, means that customers who order goods through the John Lewis website will now be able to pick them up from 1,500 of the 5,250 convenience stores in the CollectPlus network, including Spar, CostCutter and Martin McColl. The service will cost £3.
The deal is aimed at expanding John Lewis’ customer base into areas where it might not have a store. There are only around 30 John Lewis shops in the UK, although people can opt to pick up their purchases from participating Waitrose stores. The company claims that 88 per cent of people in towns in the UK live within a mile of a CollectPlus store.

Today, it seems like the sci-fi writers of decades gone-by were actually on to something. While aliens haven’t colonized us all, laser guns have yet to hit the commercial market, and the milkman service to the moon is still in development limbo, some technological dreams have finally come true. Really fancy touch screen technology is available, there’s automatic GPS for traveling, and video screens are darn near everywhere. It’s incredible.

Mailers in Talks with Postal Unions to Forestall Rate Increase

During their conference call last week, members of the U.S. Postal Service Board of Governors brought up the issue of an exigent rate increase, but chose to table it until their meeting in Kansas City on September 24-25. It was a small, but important, victory for the Affordable Mail Alliance (AMA), which had sent a letter to the Board asking it to consider the effect a rate hike might have on 8 million private sector jobs and annual related revenues of $1.3 trillion.
“The governors gave us two weeks to see if mailers and postal employees could rally to push for postal reform,” says Jerry Cerasale, SVP of government affairs at the Direct Marketing Association, a member of the AMA. “So we have been talking with all four unions and we hope that, if they see some movement in the right direction, the governors will ask for an increase based on the Consumer Price Index and not file for an exigent increase.”

New Government Affairs Chief Joins DMA

Peggy Renken Hudson, an experienced lobbyist and former BP global affairs executive, joined the Direct Marketing Association's (DMA) Washington, D.C., office, where she will take over for longtime SVP of Government Affairs Jerry Cerasale. He brings nearly two decades at DMA to a close when he retires at the end of the year.

News Byte: Twitter to Buy MoPub and Sell Mobile Ads

Twitter VP of Product for Revenue Kevin Weil announced in a blog yesterday that the company would acquire mobile ad exchange MoPub to aid app publishers in selling ads.
“MoPub's technology lets mobile app publishers…optimize multiple sources of advertising—direct ads, house ads, ad network, and real-time bidding in a single product,” Weil wrote.
The acquisition signals Twitter's eagerness to compete with AOL, Facebook, and Google as a full-service provider of both mass and direct marketing vehicles. "This could make significant waves in how advertisers decide to allocate their budgets," said Marc Poirier, cofounder and EVP of business development at Acquisio, a multichannel media platform."Quality mobile ad inventory is in high demand and Twitter would arguably be one of the top-three sources for such traffic after Google and Facebook.”
Weil stressed that the move fits with Twitter's mission to present relevant marketing to users. “We plan to use MoPub's technology to build real-time bidding into the Twitter ads platform so our advertisers can more easily automate and scale their buys,” Weil wrote. “Our approach is to show an ad when we think it will be useful or interesting to a user, and that isn't changing.”

Tesco and The Body Shop to use Apple's mobile wallet for marketing

Dubbed Passbook, Apple’s mobile wallet lets users store items such as receipts, boarding passes and voucher codes on their mobile device. But take-up by UK companies has so far been slow, with the few firms that use it doing so only for managing customer relations.
However, the two retailers, plus Seatwave and eFlorist, are now set to use Passbook as an affiliate marketing channel, letting users store vouchers for use later.
They have signed up to a service from Tradedoubler aimed at letting brands market to customers by nudging them towards an action. The retailers will be able to target customers that have stored vouchers with marketing messages using, for example, their location or if an offer is coming to an end.

Privacy Groups Bristle at Facebook's Proposed Privacy Changes

Facebook's announcement late yesterday that it will delay the rollout of a revised privacy policy and data use agreement until next week comes on the heels of unified outcry from consumer rights groups. The updates were originally scheduled to go into effect September 5.
When the social network announced the planned changes on August 29, six consumer privacy groups sent a letter on September 4 to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) asking the agency to prevent those changes from happening, arguing that the prospective changes violate Facebook's 2011 settlement with the FTC.

The Internet as we have come to know it will soon be dramatically changing. In a few months new domain extensions will be introduced and used alongside the ones everyone is already accustomed to, such as .com, .net and .org. The Internet's governing body, ICANN, has accepted nearly 2,000 applications for new “generic Top-Level Domains” (gTLDs), which include terms like .shoes, .music, and .app, as well as brand-specific applications for extensions like .Nike, .Ford and .Macys.

While .com web addresses will likely remain most popular for the foreseeable future, gTLDs are uncharted territory—no one knows exactly what the ultimate outcome will be. Will these new gTLDs become more popular than .com?  Will they fail to capture interest? Will they catch on in specific areas or industries? Is Twitter looking for new ways to monetize its ubiquitous, global digital communications network? That's what most wags read into the company's hiring of ex-Ticketmaster president Nathan Hubbard as its first head of commerce last week, and most expect Twitter's journey into e-commerce (or media, or data-selling) to be as circuitous and suspenseful as Facebook's.
“I think there's a lot of potential with e-commerce and Twitter, because it is such an easy and fluid way to message to specific groups of people,” says Chris Marentis, CEO of Surefire Social, which helps e-coms create websites and social strategies. “Today, media is about the right place, the right message, and the right time. Telefonica: 'Apple imposing itself on the mobile web'

The mobile operator, owner of the O2 brand, kicked off the campaign yesterday (3 September) dubbing it ‘The Open Agenda’ with representatives of the pair of companies openly criticising Apple’s dominance of mobile web usage.
Speaking at Campus Party yesterday, hosted by the operator’s digital arm Telefonica Digital at The O2, Daniel Applequist, Telefonica’s open web advocate, argued app store owners such as Apple as are “imposing themselves on the value chain”.
Speaking on a panel session, he said: “There’s some more forces working towards a closed future – particularly with apps – at present. We’re launching a campaign to promote a civil discourse for a more open internet and how it can have a positive impact on government and people.”

Carnival investing $180 million in clean-air technology

Carnival Corp. is pouring more than $180 million into new technology to clean fuel exhaust on roughly a third of its fleet in an effort to meet strict air pollution standards off North American coasts that go into effect in 2015.
The Miami-based cruise ship company will announce the plan Thursday along with the Environmental Protection Agency, which along with the U.S. Coast Guard and Transport Canada is supporting Carnival’s efforts to develop and install dual filtration and scrubbing devices on 32 ships. The EPA will allow Carnival to use standard fuel at sea while it tests the equipment rather than forcing the company to burn cleaner but more expensive fuel on the ships included in the program.

Acxiom Gives Consumers Access to Data

Data services company Acxiom will launch AboutTheData.com “overnight,” a website that allows consumers to access their personal data and edit inaccurate entries.
This is in line with frequent requests made by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), which has been asking so-called data brokers for more transparency. In a March 2012 FTC report entitled “Protecting Consumer Privacy in an Era of Rapid Change,” the FTC called upon data brokers to create a centralized portal where data brokers could identify themselves, describe how they collect and use consumer data, and detail access rights.

Microsoft buys Nokia's handset business for £4.6bn

The deal will see Microsoft purchasing Nokia’s services and devices business, which includes the Finnish company’s smartphone and feature phone business; its marketing, operations, sales and design teams; and its manufacturing and assembly facilities. Microsoft will license some of Nokia’s patents for use across all Microsoft products, including the ability to use its Nokia HERE mapping system - although this will continue to be owned by Nokia.
Microsoft is also acquiring the “Lumia” and “Asha” brand names that Nokia has used for its most recent smartphone and feature phone ranges respectively. It has licensed the use of the Nokia brand on current products and on feature phones under a 10-year agreement, although Nokia will retain ownership of the brand, which has led to early speculation the Nokia brand will disappear from future smartphone devices.

Infographic: Spice Up Your Marketing Mix

Multichannel marketing is a lot like cooking. It requires trial and error, and each company has its own acquired taste. But consumers have a broad palate when it comes to devices. According to “The Mobile & Cross-Device Study” by ValueClick Media and Greystripe, the average American uses three or more devices to access the Web. Hence, marketers need to integrate their channels, rather than serve them à la carte, to satisfy consumers' tastes.
But cooking up new multichannel strategies doesn't scare marketers. In fact, 77% of marketers surveyed deem cross-device targeting as important, and 89% say targeting the same user across different devices is critical. Likewise, 75% of media buyers say they've seen an increase in effectiveness with cross-device campaigns, according to the study. This sweet success has lead marketers to dedicate 30% of their 2013 digital media spend to cross device, compared to 24% last year.

EBay: 'Marketers cannot afford to miss out on Xmas long-listers'

The ecommerce giant’s advertising arm has published a study showing there were more than 150,000 UK searches for “Christmas” on its site between May and June this year, as consumers  begin contemplating their seasonal gifts ahead of the holiday, a behaviour eBay Advertising calls “long-listing”.
The study also shows that from September to December 2012, there were over a quarter of a million searches for the generic term “Christmas presents”, plus 170,000 searches for “stocking fillers”, with eBay adding that marketers “can’t afford to miss out” on influencing these “long-listers” as they start to finalise their purchase decisions.
EBay also recommends marketers begin tailoring their messaging for the ‘gifting market’ as early as October, as this is typically when they start to research purchases for others.

Accreditation scheme to identify legitimate telemarketers planned

The Direct Marketing Association (DMA) is putting the finishing touches to a scheme dubbed TPS Assured - after self-regulatory body the Telephone Preference Service - which will be awarded to companies that demonstrate they are compliant with the requirements of the TPS.
The TPS, run by the DMA under license from Ofcom but enforced by the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO), has almost 18 million people registered that have asked to be removed from prospect lists.
TPS Assured, however, will only be awarded to brands that make their own outbound calls, not the contracted call centres that are often guilty of not screening the TPS and therefore making the unwanted calls.

No, these days, the supplier of telecommunications and IT systems leads key decision makers into the Social Media Listening Center on its San Jose campus.
“We brought in a chief communications officer from a big prospect who was a little skeptical about social media,” says Charlie Treadwell, Cisco's social intelligence manager. “What we do is show the customers what their customers are saying about them. So we're going through the demo and this guy actually jumps out of his chair and says, 'I know this [bleep]! What's he saying about us?' After the session concluded, a deal was imminent and the communications chief was muttering that he wanted a listening module of his own outside his office.

Ex-News Corp. Exec Named Roku CMO

South Florida emerging as a leading flight-training location

Call it Florida’s “Sim City.”
Clustered along Northwest 36th Street in the area along Miami International Airport’s northern border are the companies and schools that house most of South Florida’s 62 FAA-approved airline flight simulators. Private and commercial pilots, and many aviation professionals, learn and hone their craft on the devices, which re-create the experience of aircraft flight. Only Atlanta, with 64, and the Dallas-Fort Worth area, with 122, currently have more.

Co-op eyes online grocery move

The Co-operative is to become the latest and last of the big six supermarket to move into the online grocery sector, with trials for its e-commerce set to commence later this year.
The supermarket is currently deciding whether to roll out a bespoke offering tailored for the convenience market or a more common click and collect or home delivery route.
It will trial four different models of delivery and is likely to utilise its existing fleet of vans, which deliver shopping worth more than £25 bought in store to customers’ homes, according to a report in trade magazine Retail Week. The article says the supermarket will also leverage its existing click and collect partnership with Amazon, which has installed lockers in The Co-op’s larger stores.

The shiny objects, er, trends, that many marketers are obsessed with today are Big Data, cloud technologies, and social, Trillium Software SVP of Marketing Len DuBois pointed out during a recent conversation. And all for good reason. But sometimes big trends can overshadow more low-profile but equally important ones. Data quality, for example.
“One of the biggest, but often underplayed, trends is the shift in responsibility for data quality,” DuBois said. In most organizations IT often has oversight for data quality, as well as the tools to maintain it. Increasingly, however, data oversight is moving to the business side, which is often responsible for taking action on that data and is closer to what should be improved and how. And with today's technologies it's easier than ever for business users and analysts to do “self-service” data quality, he said.

Microsoft: CEO Ballmer to retire in 12 months

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer, known as much for his zany personality as his business discipline, will leave a legacy of mixed results and a monumental challenge for his yet-to-be-named successor.
Ballmer announced on Friday that he plans to retire sometime in the next year. He has worked for the company for 33 years. After helping founder Bill Gates transform Microsoft from a tiny start-up into the world’s most valuable company, Ballmer took over for Gates in early 2000.

Asda to add social media recommendations to packaging

Asda is looking to make its Chosen By You own-brand food range more “emotional” by adding real social media posts from customers about its products to packaging and point of sale where the items sit.
The supermarket has invited customers to tweet and write Facebook posts about the range using a #ChosenByMe hashtag. The best posts are being curated into a hub page on the Asda.com website, from which some will be selected to appear on in-store POS barkers and on-pack stickers - with the customer’s permission.
